Protección frente a impactos laterales

NEW KIDFIX III S CHAIR BY BRITAX RÖMER

Some time ago we were looking for a new Group 2/3 chair (15-36 kg) for our daughter and we wanted the best in the market. Among all the brands we know and visit at the fairs, the one that has seemed safer and more reliable for years is Britax Römer. We were introduced to the popular and successful KIDFIX range a while ago and the last product of it is the KIDFIX III S. It is the most complete backup elevator of the brand both in safety and comfort. We like its large seat, ideal for growing children, but what we liked the most are its safety extras. I refer to the fourth anchor point of the SecureGuard belt, which I have already mentioned in this childcare blog, of the XP-PAD pad that covers the diagonal stretch of the belt and protects the child’s neck and chest in case of collision or sudden braking and its side impact absorption system SICT. Another point in favor of this chair for ‘older’ children is its ease of installation. I did it myself in the car in less than a minute thanks to the Isofix and weighing only 8 kg. We are going to present it step by step in this post. Keep reading to get to know it more in detail.

This is a premium chair for all its innovation in safety and comfort for our children and, nevertheless, its price is super competitive: starting at 310 euros. One of the most frequently asked questions among fathers and mothers is how old does my child have to be to use a car seat? Here I have detected many doubts in the parents of the school and in the readers of this blog. Some say that until children are 135 cm. tall, even when the regulations (especially the European ones) advise 150 cm. tall and 12 years old. Tall, young children should not go without a chair because it protects their spine and neck from a possible collision. Another question is when children can already sit in front. To answer this, I refer you to the blog of Matias Massó, the highest expert in child restraint systems and distributor of Britax Römer in Spain.

The Fourth Belt Anchor Point

The KIDFIX III S has the fourth anchor point of the SecureGuard belt as I told you, why is this safety measure good? It is usual to hold the child with the 3-point belt of the car in the chair but in the absence of the crotch section, if the child’s position is not the most appropriate at the time of impact, the belt easily passes from retaining the hip towards down to retain the belly back, with the risk of intrusion injuries in the liver, spleen and kidneys. A study explains that children spend an average of 20 minutes every hour sitting in incorrect positions. Surely this does not surprise you, or does your son or daughter always sit correctly in the chairs? So in the event of a possible collision there is a high risk that without this fourth anchor point there will be lesions in the liver, spleen and kidneys.

Britax Römer found the solution and endowed its Group II / III lifters with a crotch harness that acts as a fourth anchor point for the safety belt, preventing the abdominal section from deviating from the correct path. This fourth anchor point is called Secureguard and I show you in the photos above. In addition to insurance, it allows children to move freely during journeys.

Protect the child’s neck and chest

Another security innovation patented by Britax Römer is the XP-PAD pad. It already existed but in this model KIDFIX III S a new version has been developed. Imagine that in case of collision or sudden braking this pad, which you see in the photos above, covers the diagonal stretch of the belt and protects the neck and chest of your son or daughter. According to tests performed, this pad deflects up to 30% of the energy of the delicate neck of the child and prevents cervical hyperflexion, by reducing the movement of the head. In addition, its padding covers the edges of the seat belt.

The XP-PAD has been optimized to offer a simpler installation, a better retraction of the seat belt, greater comfort for the child and a more modern design, maintaining the same safety behavior in case of suffering a frontal impact.

Protection against side impacts

I told you in the introduction that we liked Britax Römer chairs for safety and comfort for kids. In the case of this, back-up lifts have been designed to protect children with up to three systems: first the device housing that provides protection from the head to the hip, especially in the case of side impact; second, the upper and lower guides that guarantee that the 3-point belt is placed correctly on the shoulders and the hip, and finally, the padded headrest that provides safety and comfort for the child’s head and neck. You have to lift it and place it at the optimum height of your child. You also have to open by unscrewing the SICT system (above in the photo). This offers superior protection to the child in case of lateral collision. In principle you just have to unscrew the SICT on the side of the chair that is closer to the door.

Ergonomic seat, backrest and headrest

We talked a moment ago about the headrest that is comfortable and easy to adjust to the height of each child (you have to put it just above their shoulders). I will also tell you that this KIDFIX III S chair is much wider than that of other models in the KIDFIX range. And speaking of ergonomics, the V-shaped backrest design provides more space for the back and shoulders as children grow. The backrest automatically adjusts to the angle of the car seat, providing better coupling and a comfortable position for the child. If your son or daughter is tall this is a chair that I also recommend. Its area is longer and 20% larger than that of similar models.

The chair installation is super intuitive. In our case we have Isofix, you just have to insert and check that the car has been anchored well and you see that because the green tab appears on the anchor buttons.
You have 8 colors available for the KIDFIX III S chair. We decided on this silver gray called Cool Flow Silver which is beautiful but you have in garnet (Burgundy Red), in black (Cool Flow Black), blue and black (Cool Flow Blue), the Cosmos Black, in passion red (Fire Red), all blue (Moonlight Blue) or strong gray (Storm Gray). The price had already told you, from 310 euros that for a premium high-security product, that your children will use for many years and in all your trips, it seems more than competitive.
