Dialogues with Sara Carbonero and Garvalin

Until Madrid I have just arrived from Paris to participate in the dialogues that the shoe brand, Garvalin, had prepared with their ambassador, journalist Sara Carbonero. You know that Garvalin is a brand committed to children and their families. In March of this year we already had a creative workshop with Sara Carbonero and many children to get to know about the philosophy of the brand “Children who are children”. In this new event, customers of the brand (points of sale) and a small group of bloggers had participated, among which I will explain. I want to thank Garvalin for their invitation because the dialogues have been super constructive. There was also participation of psychologist and writer Begoña Ibarrola, co-author of the emotional intelligence programs “Sentir y Pensar”, which I met at conferences in Barcelona a year ago and always provides a very constructive view of the education of children. Also the visual artist Yolanda Domínguez, recognized for her work “Children vs Fashion” that surprised us with a video in which 8 year old children made their particular analysis of the fashion ads that we see in newspapers and magazines. Finally, Miguel Ángel López, Hematocrític, expert in social networks, humorist, podcaster, blogger, but mainly teacher of Infantile Education as well as writer of children books, ”Happy Feroz” and “Agent Ricitos”. I did not know his humorous side and all, but what he said in his speech seemed coherent, successful and very constructive for those present. Continue reading and I tell you much more about this interesting event.

Garvalin’s dialogues with Sara Carbonero were an invitation to parents present at the event, both from the perspective of bloggers and stores to connect with children today. That is why after the talk we did a creative exercise in which we were supposed to think as 6 year old children and we could assess if we really are able to anticipate their thinking or not. Children surprise us every day. My daughter did not go any further. It’s her birthday next week. I asked her what she wanted as a gift and, thinking she knew it, she was expecting a toy. But no. She asked me for a music box, percussion, specifically.

Yolanda Dominguez spoke a little about this. How we mark our children with preconceived ideas based on our habits, beliefs and values. Also of sex, whether they are boys or girls. We screened a video in which a group of 8-year-olds discuss the campaigns that fashion brands often launch to promote their new collections. Typical fashion editorials or magazine ads. The children saw the girls (who appear in suggestive positions, lying on the ground many times) as sick, drunk and even dead or about to die. However, they saw men as superheroes, bosses and entrepreneurs. You can see this study here. Look at how children decode the images and expose the implicit violence and inequality between men and women.

Begoña Ibarrola affirmed that our children from a very young are exposed to many stimuli and are not prepared for them. More and more children between the ages of 5 and 6 are anxious. “We forget that children are children, that is to say that we want them to behave in certain way with an age that does not fit them,” said Ibarrola, who subscribes to the slogan of the Garvalin brand “Children who are children”. “I see the children very stressed, they are the faithful reflection of their parents. And at the same time I see them very vulnerable. They see news of a world that they do not yet understand, they have an excess of information continuously, of activities, of stimuli. They are living too anxiously for their age and this worries me a lot. They all want it fast and this makes them also have a very low tolerance for frustration. They also adopt social models of older children as their own. There is a natural process that is breaking. We ourselves force you to make decisions very fast and shorten your age. They have an excess of products and you have to teach them that in life being a better person does not happen to have more objects but more values, “added Begoña Ibarrola.

Miguel Ángel López, the Hematocrític, also agreed on this point. He explained as a primary teacher (and specifically now of three-year-olds) that all he owes all his training to his students. And they do not stop surprising him every day. Sara Carbonero asked him and the other participants what characteristic should a child not lose and Miguel Angel Lopez answered “the desire to play. The game is the pillar of education. Parents think their children have to do extracurricular activities outside of school to not waste time at home, when they really should use this time to play and even do nothing, to be children. Children now have an excess of activities.”

Yolanda Domínguez said that children should never lose their creativity and the ability to think that everything is possible because as they grow up they will dare to fulfill their dreams. He also warned that there is currently excessive sexualization, especially in girls.

Begoña Ibarrola said that the best thing about being children is the curiosity and the illusion and when Sara Carbonero asked the three by the technology, referring to the excessive use of the mobile phone or the tablets, the three agreed that it can be more comfortable for parents but not the best for the kids. Miguel Ángel López as a teacher warned that perhaps with technology children are more brilliant intellectually speaking, that is to say they are able to pass a test that for us, when we were younger, was impossible, but then they have problems to fasten a button or cords. “In addition we are seeing strange things in the school because of the excessive use of the mobile devices: laterality problems, etc.”

As the room was filled with customers of Garvalin, Sara asked the three speakers to think about what would be an ideal shoe store. For them they have to return to be magical places and proposed very original ideas. For example, to paint footprints on the floor with different numbers so that when each child finds his own, make the little participant a part the purchase accompanying the grocer to look for his shoes and even having a place (that can be a blackboard) in which they design their own footwear collections. They also asked that there be no boys’ or girls’ section.

In the dialogues we also talked about emotional intelligence to provide the self-esteem and empathy that will help our children to self-manage and that will also provide them with tools to cope with adulthood. As you can see it was a very relaxed conversation in which all the attendees were were able to participate even with the creative exercise in which for a moment we were children of 6 years and we could think like them.

In the event I was with Imma Pérez, Garvalin Marketing Manager, and I had the opportunity to listen to their Director General, Joaquín García. Garvalin is not only committed to knowing firsthand how children are today, but also to carry out an informative work with different audiences, hence their dialogues, which allowed us to create this content of quality and interest to reinforce its message: Children who are children “. “In Garvalin we believe in real children, in the pure state. That’s why we make colorful shoes, comfortable, prepared to live with those things that a child should do when they behaves like a child, “says Imma Pérez.

Garvalin designs collections that have been designed to allow children to continue doing all those things they enjoy being young: jump, run, play with friends in the park, have adventures, etc. In comfort and fun is the key and that said, in a few days I will present you all the casual chic collection for autumn and winter that you will love.

Me encanta leerte.
